How can they be saved?
The Vaquitas can be helped, but time is running out. Scientists predicted that there would only be two years to save them. Multiple steps have been taken to help the Vaquita. A reserve, called the Upper Gulf of California and Colorado River Delta Biosphere Reserve was created in 1993 to help the Vaquita and other endangered animals living in the Gulf of California. There is a ban on gill net fishing on a small part of the reserve that is especially for the Vaquita, but gill net fishing is not banned anywhere else.
The Mexican government has created the International Committee for the Recovery of the Vaquita (CIRVA) to help save the Vaquita. They are trying to convince the fishers not to use gill nets in these waters, but this is difficult because the fishers depend on the sea to make their living. If there would be no more fishers using gill nets, then no more vaquitas would get caught in these nets. Other job opportunities should be created for the fishers.
It would be the easiest to just catch a few Vaquitas and breed them in order to release them back into the wild, but Vaquitas do not survive in captivity, which makes it even more difficult to save them.
